Schema Markup, the Emergence of Structured Data

More and more people are incorporating AI into their daily lives. They start their day by asking ChatGPT for the weather, converse with Gemini to improve the quality of their proposals, and even ask AI for recommendations for weekend date spots. We live in an era where we ask, answer, and communicate with AI.

As consumers and marketers, we must be able to zoom out and view this phenomenon. AI has intricately permeated the daily lives of our customers. So, what should we marketers do? We need to understand this field, which has established itself under the new name of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), by ensuring our brand is mentioned in AI responses, which serve as a new touchpoint for customers.

But how can it appear in the AI answer?

The AI response itself cannot be manipulated. It is an area beyond our control. However, what we can do is precisely infer what questions the user asks and prepare “reliable references”.

The core of that preparation is schema markup. (Of course, the most important thing is the content of the schema markup!!!)

3 things AI lacks

To understand schema markup, you must first know how AI reads information.

3 Things Without AI, GEO Strategy

AI has no eyes

AI does not visually perceive and judge images or screens as humans do. It understands information using machine language and interprets meaning by analyzing the relationships between those terms.

No matter how well-designed your website homepage is, the way AI “sees” the screen is different from humans. It reads the visible text and HTML structure, but it does not intuitively grasp the design intent or the context of the layout.

AI has no brain 🧠

This interpretation process appears as if it has a brain. However, AI does not have a brain. It merely applies the principles of human neuroscience; it does not make judgments on its own.

AI breaks down text into entities and analyzes the relationships between them to infer meaning. When reading the phrase “Elifunt,” without context, one cannot be certain whether it is a company, a service name, or a person’s name. Schema markup is the act of clearly declaring in machine language, “This is an Organization, and this is a Service provided by that company.”.

AI has no hot heart 🫀

Let's say a review appears on social media saying, "The service here is seriously insane." As marketers, we immediately sense whether this is the highest praise or the worst complaint, depending on the context. However, to AI, "crazy" is merely a neutral or sometimes negative word.

Let's try another example. The same applies to the expression “Jung-kkeokma (What matters is a heart that does not break).” While AI understands the dictionary definition of this phrase, it cannot independently perceive the indomitable will of Koreans and the trend-related context embedded within it. Schema markup is the process of embedding clear 'facts'—such as “This is a positive review and includes a rating out of 5”—to prevent the machine from misunderstanding this human context.

AI is a machine. (But now, very advanced…)

How AI works, examples of schema markup application

In machine language, information must be provided so that the machine can see it in order for the AI to “see” (AI Visibility), and only when it determines that the information is the most relevant does it “mention or cite” it in the answer generated by the AI.

What is Schema Markup?

Schema Markup, a Common Word Dictionary That Machines Can Understand!

Schema markup is code added to a webpage that explains to search engines and AI in a machine-readable language “what this page is and what information it contains.”.

It is based on schema.org , a common vocabulary standard created jointly by four companies—Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex—in 2011. It can be viewed as a dictionary of common words that machines understand, such as "Organization," "Article," and "Product ." It is considered a representative standard language referenced by major search engines and various platforms.

HTML vs. Schema Markup, What Is the Difference?

The screen we see is created using HTML. Schema markup does not affect the HTML body, and <script> 태그 안에 따로 작성됩니다. 스키마 마크업을 추가해도 방문자 화면에는 아무것도 달라지지 않습니다. 오직 구글과 AI만 읽는 보이지 않는 언어입니다.

Understanding relationshipsGuessing neededClearly recognize
Google Rich Snippet❌ Impossible✅ Available
AI citation❌ Difficulty✅ High probability

🥸 Do I have to use only JSON-LD for schema markup?

It is said that there are three formats for writing schema markup: JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa. The method recommended by Google JSON-LD.

The reason is that the JSON-LD format is completely separated from the HTML body, making maintenance easier and ensuring that the entire page does not break even if code errors occur. To put it more simply, if the identity (schema markup content) remains unchanged even when the page's design or appearance changes, separating them is more efficient for management.

Of course!!! If the core information of the HTML body changes, you must also change the schema markup!

Schema Markup, Structured Data, and Google Rich Snippets

  • Schema Markup: Web Standards, Entire Lexical System
  • Google Structured Data: A type officially supported by Google
  • Google Rich Result: A visual representation on the search results screen (SERP) when specific conditions are met

1️⃣ Schema Markup : Web Standards

Schema markup is a web standard. It is based on a common vocabulary system called schema.org , which was jointly created by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex in 2011. It declares the meaning of a webpage using a common machine-readable language, such as “This page is an Article,” “This organization is an Organization,” and “The price of this product is X.”

As of 2025, schema.org defines over 800 types. Organization, Person, Product, Article, Event, LocalBusiness, Recipe, MedicalCondition, SoftwareApplication… It is a vocabulary system capable of structuring most types of information. Most search engines and AI crawlers use this standard.

Schema markup is not exclusive to Google. Bing, Naver, and AI like ChatGPT and Perplexity also read this standard.

2️⃣ Google Structured Data: Types officially supported by Google

Among the approximately 800 types on schema.org, there are types that Google has designated as "officially supported and usable for search if written in a specific format." Google documented these separately under the name **Structured Data**and specified required and recommended attributes for each type.

The key point of Google Structured Data you must accurately match the format and attributes required by Google for it to recognize them correctly. Even types defined on schema.org may not be displayed in Google Rich results if they are not officially supported by Google.

3️⃣ Google Rich Results (Rich Snippets): Visual representations that appear in the SERP when conditions are met

Rich Results (Rich Snippets) are elements displayed additionally in search results when essential attributes are met for visually representable types within Google's structured data. Unlike standard blue links, information such as star ratings, prices, publication dates, image thumbnails, and event dates is displayed directly in the search results.

pages with rich results applied record an average click-through rate (CTR) 20–80% higher, securing Google rich snippets is important for improving marketing performance.

Schema Markup Application Examples

👉 Schema Markup: If You're Going to Use It, Consider Google Rich Snippets!

Not all schema markup results in Google Rich Snippet preemption. However, if the schema markup we designed is similar to the structured data area defined by Google, it is recommended to apply the standards of Schema.org and Google's structured data markup to ensure Rich Snippet preemption! Killing two birds with one stone!

Why Schema Markup Is Important in AI Search

The landscape of search has changed.

As mentioned in the introduction, many things are changing as AI technology rapidly becomes mainstream. In particular, in the first half of 2025, clients including Elifunt saw traffic from AI-based search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) increase. This signals that customer behavior itself is changing, rather than just being a passing trend.

When a customer asks ChatGPT, “Recommend a B2B CRM solution,” ChatGPT generates an answer by directly mentioning 2 to 7 brands instead of listing 10 links. Where does the difference lie between the brands included in that answer and those that are not?

3 Roles Schema Markup Plays in GEO

First, register the brand as an independent “entity.”.

If you properly create an Organization schema, AI recognizes your brand not as a simple website, but as a specialized company in a specific field. It is just like how AI mentions a person more confidently if their name is listed on Wikipedia.

Second, it provides structured facts that AI can cite.

The content contained in the description attribute of the Article schema serves as a citation source when generating AI responses. It is to prepare “what this company does” in a machine-readable format.

Third, specify the relationships between the contents.

the provider, isPartOf, and about attributes, the AI recognizes them as a single piece of brand knowledge rather than as individual pages.

No matter how good the content you write is without schema markup, it is difficult for AI to be certain whose it is or what it means. Schema markup an official self-introduction.

Schema.org defines over hundreds of schema types. Fortunately, marketers do not need to know all of them. The key is determining which schema to apply to your website and pages to most effectively declare information.

Recommended combinations of schema markup per page

Schema markup can be created by nesting the markup most suitable for the corresponding webpage. We introduce the most commonly used combinations as examples.

  • Homepage (/) → Organization + Website set (Required) The base entity for the entire site. The starting point for all schemas. Adding a LinkedIn URL to sameAs changes AI brand recognition
  • About Us / Company Introduction → Organization + AboutPage Includes company name, logo, contact information, year established, and sameAs (external authoritative link).
  • Service / Feature / Solution Detail Page → Service (or SoftwareApplication ) + BreadcrumbList If the focus is on “Inquiry,” use Service; if it describes the app/software itself, use SoftwareApplication. The key is to connect the Organization as the provider
  • Plan / Pricing Page → Product + Offer + BreadcrumbList Use only when the plan name, price, currency, and availability are actually visible on the page. Including a non-existent price is a violation of Google policy.
  • Blog Post / Insight → Article or BlogPosting + BreadcrumbListdateModifiedis the key. Be sure to edit it whenever you update a post. AI trusts the latest information more.
  • FAQ Page / Service Page with FAQ Section → FAQPage + BreadcrumbList . Markup only the Q&A actually visible on the page. High potential for use as an AI citation source.
  • Step-by-step Guide / How-to Content → HowTo + Article + BreadcrumbList AI tends to refer to the HowTo structure when answering "how to" type questions. You must clearly describe each step in the step array
  • Inquiry / Implementation Consultation Page → ContactPage + Organization. If phone number, email, or address is available, also add a ContactPoint
  • Team / Expert Introduction Page → Person Author, Speaker, or Executive Page. Connecting with the Article's authorincreases the credibility of Thought Leadership content.

Practical Application! Viewing the Schema Markup JSON-LD Code Directly

You understand why we are told to use schema markup... but are you worried that as a marketer, you have to write the code as well?! Don't worry. Writing schema markup code is a very simple task. In fact, what is more important is deciding which schema markup to use and what content to include; that is the marketer's responsibility.

Tools like Schema Buddy, a schema creation service developed by developers or Elifunt, help you easily generate markup code!

What does the basic structure of JSON-LD look like?

Basic structure of schema markup

@contextis a declaration that “the schema.org language,” @typeis a type declaration that “this page is an Article.” If you understand just these two things, you are halfway there.

Homepage: Organization + Website

Example of applying schema markup

You can group multiple schemas into a single script by using the @graph array. For the homepage, be sure to include Organization and WebSite as a set.

Blog Post: Article (or BlogPost) + BreadcrumbList

Schema Markup Application Examples

If you have completed the code, you must verify it

JSON-LD is a language. It must be written according to its syntax to be recognized. The completed code must be validated with a validator before use.

  • Step 1 (Required) — Check for vocabulary and grammar errors:schema.org Validator → JSON syntax, check for missing required attributes
  • Step 2 (Optional) — Verify Google Rich Snippet Eligibility:Google Rich Results Test → Simulates what rich results Google can generate with this schema. However, Step 2 is optional because Google Rich Snippets apply only to certain schemas.
  • Step 3 – After confirming that the Validator results show 0 errors please forward them to the development team.

Schema Markup, Things You Should Never Do

Violating Google's Structured Data Quality Policy can result in the loss of rich snippet exposure as well as search ranking penalties. Be sure to avoid the following four things.

1. Marking up information that is not on the page

There is only one absolute principle of schema markup: mark up only what is actually visible on the page. You must NEVER put an aggregateRating on a page without star ratings , or put offers on a service page without prices

2. Incorrect type selection

There are cases where the Product schema is used on B2B service introduction pages centered on the “Introduction Consultation” CTA. If you use Product without a price list, you cannot fill in the mandatory attribute “ offers,” and forcing its inclusion violates policy. When in doubt, Service is the safer choice.

3. Using relative paths for images and URLs

// Invalid example — Google cannot find resource
"logo": "/images/logo.png"
// Correct example
"logo": "<https://elifunt.kr/images/logo.png> "

All URLs and images in the schema markup must be absolute paths starting with https://

4. Copy and paste the same FAQ across multiple pages

This is a case where you create an FAQPage schema and insert the same Q&A into service introductions, blogs, and inquiry pages. If Google detects duplicate FAQPages, it will not provide FAQ Rich results for any of the pages.

Schema markup, is it a one-time thing? … Unfortunately… no…

Schema markup is not a one-time process. If the company name changes, services are added, or prices are modified, the schema must also be updated. Since errors are not visible on the visitor screen, they are often overlooked.

The moment a schema update is needed

If the following situation occurs, the schema must also be updated.

  • Change company name, logo, address, and contact information
  • Change service name, rate plan, price
  • Add new page / Change page URL
  • Major blog post update (dateModified correction)
  • Change of person's email and phone number

If you include this list in the onboarding checklist or work manual, schema management will not be interrupted even if the person in charge changes.

5 Essential Tools for Efficiently Managing Schema Markup

This introduces tools that can be used for schema markup and management.

Tool 1: Google Search Console (Free, Required)

This is the official channel to check how Google recognizes my site's schema.

  • How to use: Check Search Console → Search Results → Rich Results Report. It shows which pages have valid schemas, warnings, or errors, categorized by type.
  • When you must check: Immediately after applying a new schema, after a major site update, or when you receive a “structured data issue” email from Google.

Tool 2: Rank Math (WordPress site)

Rank Math is the most recommended schema management plugin for WordPress users . You can configure over 23 schema types via a GUI without code, and input schemas directly while publishing content.

  • The free version supports all core types, including Article, Product, FAQ, and HowTo. The PRO version also provides custom schema templates for each page and real-time verification features.
  • Recommended for: WordPress + Elementor or Gutenberg users, or if the SEO manager wants to manage the schema directly.

Tool 3: Yoast SEO (WordPress Site)

Along with Rank Math, it is the most widely used SEO plugin for WordPress. Yoast's strength lies in the Schema Graph concept—it automatically manages the structure that connects the schemas of multiple pages within the site.

  • Recommended for: If you are already using Yoast and want to keep your Organization-WebSite-Article connection structure simple.

Tool 4: Schema Buddy (All Websites · For Marketers Only)

This is a tool that automatically analyzes the entire site and generates page-by-page schema markup simply by having non-developer marketers enter the website URL. As values are populated in the property editing table, the JSON-LD is completed in real-time and can be exported in a format suitable for delivery to the development team.

You are not dependent on WordPress, and marketers can create and validate schemas themselves without knowing any code. (We plan to make it available on Elifunt website!)

  • Recommended for: All websites, marketing teams that need to manage schemas without development resources.

Tool 5: schema.org Validator + Google Rich Results Test (Verification Only)

It is a verification tool used to check whenever a new schema is created or modified. Although it is not a management tool, it is a mandatory final gateway that must be passed through before deploying a schema.

Is it still difficult? 10 Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Does adding schema markup immediately improve search rankings?

It is not a direct factor in ranking increases. Google has officially stated that it does not use schema markup as a ranking determinant. However, the improvement in CTR caused by rich snippets indirectly influences rankings, and it has a very direct effect on increasing the likelihood of AI search citations.

Q2. I use WordPress; is it possible to do schema markup without a developer?

Yes, it is possible. If you install the Rank Math or Yoast SEO plugin, you can configure the schema in a GUI form. You do not need to write the code directly. However, for detailed settings for GEO optimization, I recommend using a tool like Schema Buddy to generate the JSON-LD!

Q3. Are schema markup and og tags (Open Graph) the same thing?

They are different. OG tags are for link previews (title, image, description) on KakaoTalk and social media, while schema markup is for Google and AI to understand the meaning of a page. Both are necessary and complementary.

Q4. Why aren't rich snippets appearing even after applying schema markup?

Check these four things: ① Google may not have crawled the page yet (check the indexing status in Search Console). ② There may be errors in the schema code (verify with the Rich Results Test). ③ Rich results of that type may be restricted to general businesses (some of Google's rich snippets do not apply to private companies). ④ It may take several weeks for Google to assign rich results after the schema is applied.

Q5. How often should schema markup be updated?

You must update “immediately whenever changes occur,” rather than “periodically like an event.” If company information, service names, prices, or content details change, be sure to update them together.

Q6. Do small companies or startups also need schema markup?

In fact, it is even more necessary for smaller companies. For large corporations, brand awareness itself serves as the signal recognized by AI. For companies with low brand awareness, declaring entities using schema markup is the surest way to let AI know, "We are here.".

Q7. Can AI mention our brand without schema markup?

Of course. Schema markup does not guarantee AI citation. However, pages with schema markup are more accurately understood by AI and are more likely to be cited with confidence. This is supported by data showing that applying an FAQ schema increases the probability of AI Overviews appearing by 3.2 times.

Q8. Do I need to include a schema on every page?

There is no need to do so. The priority order is ① Homepage (Organization + Website) → ② Core Service/Product Pages → ③ Key Blog Posts → ④ Inquiry/CTA Pages. If there is a lot of content, it is realistic to apply it sequentially, starting with the pages with the highest traffic.

Q9. Is it okay to include multiple duplicate schema markups?

You must not include duplicate types on a single page. However, different types can be grouped together using an @graph array. For example, grouping Article + BreadcrumbList + FAQPage into a single @graph for a blog post is a recommended practice

Q10. Is there a service that creates schema markup on your behalf?

Of course! contact Elifunt!

If you want to do it yourself, it is realistic to utilize tools that allow marketers to create schemas without code, such as Schema Buddy (Coming Soon!!) created by Elifunt . The important thing is that regardless of the method chosen, the marketer must personally decide what content to include in the schema (which information to emphasize).

Conclusion! Is Schema Markup the Developer's Domain?

In fact, it is the realm of marketing and communication.

Declaring what our brand is, what our service solves, and who our content is for—in the language of machines, not humans, in a form that AI can read. That is schema markup.

In an era where AI has become part of everyday life, if you want your brand to appear in the answers when customers ask AI questions, you must start now.

Start with your top priority. From the website Organization schema, everything starts right away! Elifunt will be with you every step of the way : )
